On the first floor you will find a small permanent exhibit of the technology used and the coins minted, while the rest of the building in dedicated to your journey into America's only contribution to world culture begins.

For most people, Jazz happened in a vacuum, but for the pioneers of America's only contribution to world culture, Jazz was a revolutionary thought articulated through sound vibration and immense creativity. This new music called Jazz, broke all European laws of music giving total freedom of expression to both the musicians who played it and the dancers who would contribute to the Jazz Dance movement.

DAWN OF THE JASS AGE

New Orleans has been at the apex of musical and cultural art forms for well over 300 years. But it would be the contributions of the musicians during the later part of the 19th century who would establish New Orleans as the birthplace of Jazz.
From Native American musical traditions and customs presented in France during the 1700's, to the rise of the French Opera House in the mid 1800's, New Orleans musical heritage has been influential in expressing the urgency of life lived on the edge of a river in the middle of a swamp. This blending of both vernacular and world music would eventually converge to form a new musical expression designed to exhibit the highest order of freedom both musicians and dancers could express at a time when the laws questioned their very agency.
