OVERVIEW

One can trace the Creole origins of the Historic Lower Garden District back to the marriage of two very powerful Creole families when the Marigny and the Livaudais families would combine their land holdings to form what would become known as the Livaudais Plantation. In 1833, the Faubourg Livaudais would be combined with two smaller parcels of land to form the city of Lafayette.

During the Golden Era of the City of New Orleans this land mass would become known as the American Sector. And by 1851 the City of New Orleans would annex the City of Lafayette as the 4th District.

Come and re-discover the stories of the wealthy Sugarcane, Cotton, and Tobacco Planters, Brokers, and Merchants in addition to numerous high ranking government officials who called this part of the city of New Orleans home.
